Mountain
A solitary sandstone pillar rising through Yuanjiajie's mist - and the landscape most visitors connect with the floating mountains of Avatar.
Official Tour Guide Manual · Photo by Zhou JianxinThe mountain that made the landscape feel possible.
Known in the official manual as Qiankun Column, Avatar Mountain is one of Zhangjiajie's “Three Thousand Grotesque Peaks”. Its near-vertical faces and tree-covered crown create the illusion of a freestanding island when low cloud fills the valley.
The landscape was not a filming location. Its form became widely associated with the visual inspiration for the floating Hallelujah Mountains in the film Avatar.
How a sandstone pillar takes shape
The official landform interpretation is reduced to three clear stages so the geology supports the view rather than interrupting it.
- 01
Vertical joints form
Crustal movement compresses the quartz sandstone and opens upright fractures.
- 02
Water enters the lines
Flowing water and weathering deepen the fractures and separate blocks.
- 03
The pillar remains
Long erosion and collapse leave narrow columns rising from the forest.
One stop in a connected mountaintop walk.
Avatar Mountain makes sense as part of the Yuanjiajie viewpoint sequence. Your planner can arrange the entry and exit around the rest of the mountain day.
- Walking Boardwalks, steps and viewpoint paths
- Weather Mist can hide the pillar - or create the floating effect
- Access Planned through the wider scenic-area transport network

Clear enough to see the form. Misty enough to feel it float.
Cloud can move quickly through the pillar forest. A clear view reveals the vertical faces; mist separates the crown from the valley and creates the scene many travellers have imagined.

Our original short film will document the viewpoint, weather and surrounding walk. No stock trailer or simulated play button is shown before the footage is ready.
