Arrival & connections
Getting to Zhangjiajie
Choose the arrival point that fits the journey after it - then connect the city, Wulingyuan and the national park without wasting a day.
Zhangjiajie has two main gateways for international visitors: Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport and Zhangjiajie West Railway Station. The key planning decision is not only how you arrive, but where you need to be next.

Start with the right gateway
Two arrival hubs. Different next steps.
Both gateways serve Zhangjiajie, but they sit in the city rather than at the forest park. Your onward transfer depends on whether the first night is in the city, Wulingyuan or closer to a park entrance.
BY AIR
Hehua International Airport
Best for domestic flight connections into Zhangjiajie. It is the natural arrival point for a city stay or a direct road transfer onward.
- Think next
- City / Tianmen Mountain / Wulingyuan
- Check before travel
- Flight schedule and arrival transfer
BY RAIL
Zhangjiajie West Railway Station
The main rail gateway for high-speed and conventional connections. Allow time to leave the station and continue by road.
- Think next
- City / Wulingyuan / Forest Park
- Check before travel
- Train number, exit and pickup point
Read the journey in zones
Arrival is only the first transfer.
The useful mental map is simple: arrive in Zhangjiajie city, decide whether the city is part of your visit, then continue toward Wulingyuan and the entrance that matches the day's route.
Arriving by air
From Hehua Airport
Confirm where your first night or first visit is located before choosing the transfer. A city-centre stay and a Wulingyuan stay create different arrival days.
- Keep the hotel name and address available in Chinese.
- Allow for baggage collection before any onward connection.
- Do not plan a tight scenic-area entry immediately after an uncertain flight.

Arriving by rail
From Zhangjiajie West
The station connects rail arrival with onward road transport. The useful details are your train number, station exit, luggage load and the exact next zone.
- Use the full station name: Zhangjiajie West Railway Station.
- Meet only at a clearly agreed exit or pickup point.
- Keep buffer time if another booked activity follows the train.
The last transfer matters
City, Wulingyuan or directly to the park?
There is no single correct answer. The best connection depends on arrival time, hotel location, luggage, weather and which entrance your first route uses.
Useful when Tianmen Mountain, a late arrival or a city-based night comes first.
Useful when the forest park is the focus and you want a simpler next morning.
Only when timing, tickets, luggage and the route make the transfer sensible.
Inside Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
The shuttle network is part of the route.
Official scenic-area buses connect entrances, cableway and elevator stations, and major route nodes. They are not a single sightseeing loop: the bus segment must match the walking and vertical transport planned for that day.

Before you leave the arrival hall
Keep four details ready.
- 01Exact hotel name
English and Chinese if available.
- 02Next travel zone
City, Wulingyuan or a specific entrance.
- 03Arrival reference
Flight or train number and current arrival status.
- 04Comfort needs
Luggage, children, mobility and recovery time.
Questions visitors ask
Getting Here FAQs
Which is better: flying or high-speed rail?
It depends on the city you are connecting from, the arrival time and what follows in Zhangjiajie. Compare the whole door-to-door journey rather than the transport segment alone.
Is Zhangjiajie West Station inside Wulingyuan?
No. The main railway gateway is in the Zhangjiajie city area. Wulingyuan and the forest park require an onward road connection.
Should I stay in the city on arrival night?
A city stay can make sense after a late arrival or before Tianmen Mountain. If the forest park is the next focus, continuing to Wulingyuan may simplify the following morning.
Can I rely on old bus times from a guidebook?
No. Use published routes for orientation only and verify current operating information close to travel.
